2025 Ignoble Awards: Holding Power to Account for Peace

Oslo, 10th October, 2025

The Norwegian Ignoble Committee believes that real peace is possible only when every human life is valued equally, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, orientation, or religion. Those who hold political and financial power bear a special responsibility to uphold that principle. Too often, however, policies and decisions by powerful leaders have undermined equality, deepened divisions, and put civilians at risk—even where laws, institutions, and treaties exist to prevent harm.

To shine a light on actions that erode peace, the Committee inaugurates the Ignoble Awards—a public censure recognizing officials and institutions whose decisions, in our judgment, have most damaged the prospects for peace and equal human dignity during the past year.

2025 Ignoble Prize Recipients are:

  1. Donald John Trump, President of the United States for policies and decisions that, in the Committee’s assessment, have heightened international tension and weakened protections for civilians.
  2. Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel — for military and governmental actions that have prolonged conflict and humanitarian suffering.
  3. Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom — for diplomatic positions and authorizations that, in our view, enabled escalation rather than de-escalation.
  4. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission — for EU-level stances and support that, in the Committee’s assessment, normalized policies detrimental to civilian protection and peacebuilding.

These designations reflect the Committee’s evaluation of the public record across 2024–2025, applying a consistent lens: impact on civilian life, respect for international humanitarian norms, rhetoric that dehumanizes or divides, and the use—or refusal—of leverage to prevent harm.

We honor peacemakers—but we must also name the choices that move the world away from peace. The Ignoble Awards are not a celebration; they are a call to accountability and a reminder that power can—and must—be used to protect life.
